Dear Members and friends

This year's ad:tech in Shanghai was rated "R" - for recession. In addition to the usual side meetings, tech talk, panel discussions and networking, the worldwide economic downturn and particularly its impact on China and Asia and on our industry was a hot topic.

Will core digital marketing budgets remain uncut as advertisers see the value of our measurable, results-oriented media? Or, after years of seeking status as part of the advertising mainstream, will digital spending get axed as a discretionary item along with the rest of the marketing and communications budget? And will China's diminished but still thundering GDP growth balance off the downwards trend globally? China's digital spending may go up 10-15% in 2009 but there are few signs that stimulus will buoy the rest of the region.

And the answer is: sorry, there are no answers. Most ad:tech participants, whether advertisers, agencies or tech solutions providers, are holding off making decisions, delaying hires and investments, and hoping for the best but planning for the worst. Nobody thinks we are headed for another dotcom bust, but even the most ebullient players are hedging their bets.

In the meantime, our industry continues to become more sophisticated, more attuned to the needs of advertisers, and better at targeting customers and personalising campaigns. Behavioural and contextual targeting, CRM, ad networks, social media, rich media and video are all morphing and developing in an Asian way for the Asian markets.

    MIA (MEASUREMENT OF INTERACTIVE AUDIENCE) PROJECT

    The MIA (Measurement of Interactive Audience) Project is a joint initiative between the European Interactive Advertising Association (EIAA) and the Internet Advertising Bureau Europe (IAB Europe) with the objective of improving the accountability of the internet as an advertising medium.

    The MIA Project includes EIAA members, all IABs in Europe, IAB Chile (representing South America), IAB Australia, IAB US, IAB Canada, the Asia Digital Marketing Association, the relevant local Joint Industry Committees, IFABC members worldwide and media agency and advertiser representatives.

    The project will ultimately generate industry standards that can be applied to the planning phase of international advertising campaigns, and the results of this survey will be pivotal in deciding the next steps of the project.

    For Asia, the Project is concentrating on China, Japan, Korea and India. If you are responsible for online advertising or marketing either in terms of buying, placing or planning online advertising or in terms of selling or marketing online media to potential advertisers in these countries, please do particpate in this project.

    NEW STAFF MEMBER AT ADMA

    The ADMA would like to introduce you to our new staff member, Ms Lot de Jongh.

    Lot is based in Singapore and takes on the newly created part-time role of Marketing & Education Officer. Her email address is education@asiadma.com.

    Lot is Dutch and has lived in Singapore for the past 2 years. She is very personable and already proven to be a great asset for the ADMA, coming to Shanghai to help on the ADMA booth at ad:tech Shanghai. In her past life, she has worked as a freelance marcom consultant helping companies to promote their online marketing products to (potential) advertisers. This experience taught her a lot about our industry and turned her into a serious fan of digital marketing! In addition to passion for the industry, she brings extensive experience in organising and marketing educational events.

    ADMA ANNUAL REGIONAL DIGITAL MARKETING SURVEY

    The ADMA is currently conducting its fifth annual Regional Digital Marketing Survey.

    The survey is supported by the Hong Kong Institute of Marketing, the Vietnam Marketing Association, the Mobile Marketing Association, the Direct Marketing Association of Singapore and the Hong Kong Direct Marketing Association.

    Last year, the survey indicates that both large and small companies are increasing their investment in digital marketing. 39% of respondents said they will spend more than 15% of their marketing budget on digital marketing. This represents an increase of 16% over 2006. Over two thirds of those surveyed said that their online budgets have increased over last year.
